BASHO AND CRNJANSKI: COLD RICE IN POEMS OF THE OLD JAPAN

Summary/Abstract: The Poems of the old Japan anthology (1928), compiled by Miloš Crnjanski, introduced to its readers not only the Japanese classical poetry, but also its culture, defining an image of Japan. It also contains many misconceptions, omissions in the translations as well as in the descriptions of the poets, because of the author’s reliance on sources written in European languages. The Sages and poets from Asia (Sage et poètes d’ Asie) by a French philosopher Paul-Luis Cuchoud is one such source. Cold rice appears in this collection, food that was part of Basho’s diet, as reported by Crnjanski and Cuchoud. This paper explores the nature of the connection between the works of the two authors. It also attempts to determine the origins of the cold rice story by looking at the Basho’s travel diary The narrow road to the deep North.
