Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses Faulkner’s novel Absalom, Absalom! starting from the key issue raised about it in Faulkner studies – the way this novel, at the level of both form and content, problematizes the very possibility of (re)constructing the past. The relation of history and fiction in Absalom is viewed through the epistemological paradigm proposed by McHale and Donnelly, which is further enriched by the metaphor of ethnographic research. Relying on authors who place the subversive (postmodern) tendency of transgressing of boundaries among the defining features of Absalom, this paper tries to account for different types of such transgressions by a single explanatory framework. Our thesis is that such framework can be found within the theory of novel of Mikhail Bakhtin.
