Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the author dealt with the way in which Dobrica Ćosić described the post-war epoch, relying to a large extent on the postmodernist way of novelizing the history, actually historifying the novel. The poetics of the postmodernist historical novel disputes the viewpoint in which only history itself is entitled to reveal the truth about the past, questioning the “historical” of historical works, which, just like fictional narratives, are in fact the constructions of those who create them. This is not the question of denying the past but denying the possibility of reliable knowledge about it. However, the historical novels of this writer are not only on the historical level but also on the fictitious, simply because they insist on the interaction of historiography and fiction, i.e. the mixing of facts and fiction. This, according to Linda Hachion, is essentially postmodernists’ way. Ćosić’s engagement with national history is the expression of his desire not only to fill the void between the past and the present, but also the desire to write about the past in the new context. It is not the writer’s idea to annul or evade history, but the need to reexamine it, because from the postmodernists’ point of view there is a doubt in its objectivity. In his novels, Ćosić subjected to examination or re-examination not only history but also the closer past, the one that could almost be called contemporary reality. That is where the perspective through which the writer views the subject of the revolution changes. One should not neglect the engaged nature of these Cosic’s works, which had the impact not only on the social and political circumstances of their time, on the spiritual and conscious life of the contemporaries, but also on the collective awareness of national history.
