Summary/Abstract: The author argues that it was only in late nineteenth century Europe that ho- mosexual desire was taken as a sign of distinctive human type, "the homosexual." The role of medical and scientific discourses in the making of a homosexual identity is emphasized. The existence of individuals engaging in homoerotic behaviour prior to the appearance of these discourses is recognized, but the claim that these new knowl- edges created a framework for society to interpret same-sex desires and behaviour as indicative of a homosexual identity is brought forth. These new constructions of ho- mosexuality gained wide popularity through the role of public scandals or famous court trials as that of Oscar Wilde toward the end of nineteenth century.
