Summary/Abstract: The Middle East region is often listed as an invaluable source of energy and holds an important place on the international political scene as it encompasses multiple threats, from the export of Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism to a possible proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The present paper analyzes the short period in which Mihail Gorbachev served as Secretary General, respectively 1985-1991, addressing the actions started internally and culminating with the foreign policy strategy. Moscow's constant preoccupation with the Gulf states and the Middle East underlines the growing interest in this theater of action in terms of potential collaboration in commercial, political, social or cultural terms but also the struggle for the survival of the Soviet Union at the end of the 20th century.
