Summary/Abstract: The contribution of Pavol Lukáč of the Research Center of the Slovak Foreign Policy Association outlines historical and intellectual roots of cooperation in post-communist Central Europe. The article specifies basic motivational factors that led to the establishment of regional co-operation, initially in the shape of the Visegrad Three and later of the revitalised Visegrad Four. At the same time, it strives to define the causes of this co-operation’s atrophy in the mid-1990s. It provides an overview of major turning points in the evolution of the Visegrad group and offers a brief picture of common and divergent foreign policy interests of the four Visegrad countries. Lukáč also touches on relations of other states to the V-4.
