Summary/Abstract: In this paper we examine the discourse of police interrogations and analyze some specific features of this type of discourse that can be attributed to institutional discourse in general. The roles of the participants in the process of police interrogation are clearly defined and precise. These roles are obviously asymmetric particularly regarding the distribution of power and control. Police officer has a direct power over a person being interrogated, controlling the environment and making some vital decisions regarding the release or arrest of that person based on the outcome of the interrogation. In most cases, we find that a police officer uses the language of the institution he or she represents in communication with the person who does not belong to that institution.
