Summary/Abstract: The focus of this paper is Flaubert’s Parrot, a novel by Julian Barnes. One of the major questions in this study was whether this was a biography of a famous writer, Flaubert, or an autobiography of a fictionalised character, Braithwaite. This research discusses what connection Braithwaite found between Flaubert and himself, as well as what purpose Flaubert’s art would serve to Braithwaite. It explores the meaning of the parrot in the novel as well as the persistent quest for that same parrot. The research aims to analyse the difficulties of interpreting the past correctly as well as how perspective influences that interpretation and ultimately it provides an analysis of the result of the narrator’s quest and a conclusion of what it suggests.
