Summary/Abstract: Traditionally, blends such as brunch, Oxbridge and veggieburger are seen as a form of word play and consequently as exceptions. Therefore they are considered to be unique and unproductive. In this article, structurally different types of blends are studied and compared with combining forms such as Reagonomics or workaholic. It will be shown that all these types are possibly productive and thus not unique. Blends may be formed via an unusual process of word formation, but this does not affect their potential to become a model for productive processes of paradigmatic extension. In this respect, there is no essential difference between blends and combining forms.
