Summary/Abstract: This paper presents various concepts of regulation, presented within the broad stream of neo-institutional economics. The purpose of the article is to attempt to answer the question why and how contemporary regulatory theory can and should take into account the characteristics of institutions involved in the process of law-making and applying the law. Such an analysis may constitute a starting point to outline of an integral model of regulation and deregulation, taking into account the complementary nature of legislative, executive and judicial powers
