Summary/Abstract: Lexical cohesion above all concerns the way in which lexical items relate to each other and to other cohesive devices so that textual continuity is created (Flowerdew and Mahlberg 1). Apart from that, lexical cohesion, together with grammatical cohesion, not only contributes to the texture of a text, but also sets the basis for further build-up of coherence, of which lexical cohesion is said to be the main source (Hoey 10). The importance of cohesive devices for humorous texts cannot be stressed enough. Humorous texts, more than any other type of text, rely on cohesive ties in order to produce a specific type of “humorous texture.” This paper explores linguistic characteristics of lexical cohesion with reference to jokes, as one type of humorous stimuli. The main method used is descriptive-analytical.
