Summary/Abstract: When referring to theatre translation or surtitling it is rather difficult to say where the translation ends and where the interpreting begins or the other way round. Whereas in drama translation, the source text is clearly defined, in theatre translation, the source text is in fact the whole production and is, by consequence, ultidimensional. This article investigates the distinctive features of surtitling in terms of their constricted manifestations: limited to a strict temporal framework, tensioned by the competition with other stage elements, heavy abridgement for best effect, etc. This form of translation is used mainly at international theater festivals such as the International Shakespeare Festival in Craiova which provided the necessary corpus of translations.
