Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the interpretations of the Romanian communist press on the Helsinki Accords from 1975. The Helsinki Final Act was signed that year, the result of a conference attended by 35 European and North American states. The main stipulations of the Helsinki Final Act related to human rights issues, especially for Eastern European states, and to respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity. Romanian communist press paid special attention to the last two issues, being interested in acquiring independence from Moscow. Whole passages of the Final Act were reinterpreted, an action which suited state policy, but, unfortunately, lots of humanitarian stipulations were ignored.
