Summary/Abstract: A discussion held between the prominent British idealist Francis Bradley and the leader of the so called Humanistic movement Ferdinand Schiller in the early XXth century articulated some important pragmatist concepts. The consistent criticism by Bradley demonstrated the extremes to which Schiller had led William James’ pragmatism. Bradley undermined the basic assumptions of pragmatism: the usefulness of truth, the importance of practice for cognitive processes, and ‘the making of reality’; on the other side, Schiller considered his opponent’s philosophy an outdated kind of philosophical speculation. William James attempted to mediate between the two colleagues, and was successful in defining more precisely his accounts of truth and practice. Schiller’s pragmatism is an extreme form of subjectivism and voluntarism and should be differentiated from the classical pragmatism of Peirce, James and Dewey.
