Summary/Abstract: What dominates in scientific literature devoted to the analysis of models and determinants of succession processes in family enterprises is a clear willingness to find straightforward relations between the succession path and factors which determine it. The research on succession process has for many years been accompanied by the assumption that there is a uniform, unspecified imperative of continuance - passing on and taking over the enterprise by next generations, with the succession being the primary determinant for the survival of the family enterprise. The research conducted within the framework of the project Succession Strategies of Polish Family Enterprises was based on a different perspective of the succession process and family enterprise, which corresponded more to various forms of action, economic activity and social life. It was based on exchange theory and the necessity to take into consideration other factors while analyzing succession processes. The paper includes a description of the main findings of the research. It attempts to verify traditional succession goal and motives of family enterprise through the analysis of succession potential and its impact on the succession process.
