Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to approach the issue of external succession in a family firm, which is understood as a transfer of business ownership as well as business management, in the hands of people outside the family – owners. The important element of considerations discussed herein is also the presentation of forms of support, which may be used by owners of European family firms when they decide on this type of succession. The success of this transaction type gains importance in the context of business continuity and thus preservation of workplaces provided by it. European Commission recognizing the significance of external succession problem and in a wider perspective the phenomenon of business transfer (not only family business) for European economy, took actions to support main participants in this process: entrepreneur – senior selling business and its potential acquirer. The primary areas in which they may receive help are: raising awareness of entrepreneur – senior about necessity of planning succession process, education, mentoring, training and consulting, matchmaking between senior entrepreneur and potential buyers and financial support.
