Summary/Abstract: This article presents the position of Germany to the problem of reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. The above problem is an important element of environmental policy in Germany, both internally and in international cooperation. The main objective of the internal climate protection policy is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 by 40% compared to base year 1990. Achieving this goal is made possible by increasing energy efficiency, developing renewable energy sources and introduction of new technologies of procuring low carbon energy. What is equally important for Germany is to achieve such level of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which results from German international obligations. From the German perspective it is of particular importance for climate protection to negotiate in 2009 during the Copenhagen conference an international agreement which would be in force after the expiry of Kyoto Protocol in 2012.
