Summary/Abstract: The article, on the example of statistical data such as number of vehicles, hard roads, road accidents and their participants, examines the level of safety on Polish roads. The article emphasises the impact of technical means of measuring speed (speed cameras) on improvement of road safety. The author discusses existing regulations on this subject adopted by the Council of Ministers, such as the National Road Safety Programme “Gambit 2005”, Implementation programme for 2006–2007, as well as new projects of legal solutions, for example, the Act amending the Law on Road Traffic. What is important for the future of road safety is to ensure a smooth launch of automatic traffic surveillance, which is encouraged, in particular, by the creation of the Centre for Automated Traffic Surveillance.
