Summary/Abstract: In Algeria, the failure of Arabization, which coincided with the opening up of the society to the market economy, has made the real place of the French language in constant consolidation. It is the only language used in higher education and in many sectors; it is the language of medical use, science and technology; it is the language of prestigious speeches; it is the language of work,language of media... etc. However, its status is fluctuating; it changes with the change of governments. The French language in Algeria is a spoil of war, but itis also the nerve of war; it is packed with tension and its status is related to the balance of power that is played in the Algerian social scene.
