Public Family Firms Before the Latest Crisis

Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes public family firms on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The performance of family firms was measured against nonfamily firms. Three indicators were used for this comparative study: revenues, return on assets and return on equity. In addition, the firms were split and measured according to their size as small, medium and large. We analyzed family firms in the period preceding the latest crisis of 2008–2009 as it was found that a portfolio of construction family firms outperformed their nonfamily peers during this crisis. We intended to analyze a performance of public family firms before the crisis and find out whether there were any differences. In addition, the public family firm characteristic is provided in this article.
