Gian Carlo Menotti’s Opera «The Old Maid and the Thief»: Genre Peculiarities and Dramatic Composition

Summary/Abstract: Purpose of Article. The work aims to determine dramatic features of Gian Carlo Menotti’s opera "The Old Maid and the Thief" as well as to outline its genre characteristics. The research methodology is based on analytical, synthetic and comparative methods. The scientific novelty of the study consists in a detailed analysis of musical and audio materials, libretto, musicology and biographical sources, which constitute the text and context of the object under research. Conclusions. The research determines characteristic features of the drama and identifies genre parameters of the opera "The Old Maid and the Thief." This work is based on the principle of clipping-drama; it has prominent features of grotesque, i.e., harmonious coexistence of dramatic, comic and lyrical tone; vivid and striking images, which made it possible within the given opera genre to show the versatility of life and manifoldness of human character.
