Summary/Abstract: Purpose of Research. The purpose of the work is to systematize the existing views on the phenomenon of «the school» in musical arts, to comprehend the single principle of its formation and functioning. The definition of «the school» as an open dynamic system of the energy and information exchange will ensure the awareness of the specifics of the interconnections of its components, which determine the universality and uniqueness of the phenomenon. Methodology. The comprehensive approach to the «school» study actualized the involvement of analysis methods not only from the musicology sphere, but also from other branches of scientific knowledge. It became fruitful to use the quadra-matrix approach, which allows characterizing the role of the founder of «the school» and its representatives, the motives of their activity, the peculiarities of interactions, continuity among them, etc., and, at the same time, it allows identifying the direct and inverse relationships among the components of «the school», outlining the conditions for its integrity. Scientific Novelty. The introduction of the quadra-matrix for the study of the phenomenon of «the school», which was offered for the first time in musicology, makes it possible to unite the «branched» view on this phenomenon, to understand the close co-operation of the objective and the subjective in it. This approach and its originality reveal their universal qualities in the study of other components of musical culture. Conclusions. Putting the existing points of view on «the school» in order contributed to the expansion of the field of scientific knowledge, which made it possible to create some «ideal» model of the phenomenon for any sphere of activity in the musical arts. The specificity of the quadra-matrix takes into account the multilayer form of «the school». It includes various components in this phenomenon and helps to understand the role of the latter in its formation and preservation, regardless of the specialization, nationality, epoch, etc. The offered approach is characterized by universality and timelessness, which do not belittle the individuality and uniqueness of each «school», but, on the contrary, reveal the characteristic features of the system of the energy and information exchange, its leader, representatives and other elements in the life of «the school».
