The socialist modernization of the Bulgarian Muslim wome in the region of Smolian 1959–1989

Summary/Abstract: The Bulgarian Muslim women were the object of special attention as part of the official policy of creating a unified socialist nation. The article is an attempt to present a bottom-up view of how the Bulgarian Muslim women perceived the state policy directed at them. On the basis of archival materials and personal memories of the Bulgarian Muslim women, the article tries to answer the question to what degree the efforts of the Party and the state led to real results.
