The Role of Volunteering in Recreation Mission Fulfilment: the Case of Warsaw ZOO

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this research is to contribute to our understanding of volunteers profile as well as volunteers management. The group of volunteers working in Warsaw ZOO were interviewed to see their profile and to find in what mission of Warsaw ZOO volunteers take part. The findings indicate that 80% of volunteers are below 35 years old, 52% represent higher education completed. The most important motivation of the volunteers were cognitive (interested in exotic animals 72%, learn new skills 63%) and the desire to help with the task of wild animal protection (63%). The activities performed by volunteers mostly help ZOO to fulfill its education and recreation mission.
