Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study was to present the retail trade characteristics with special attention given to its essence, classification as well as forecasted changes. Based on secondary data it was pointed that the Polish retail trade has changed significantly during last period. It is determined by large retail foreign networks, including discounts, hypermarkets and supermarkets. Ten largest retail networks control more than half of retailsales. There are: Jeronomo Martins, Lidl, Auchan, Tesco and Carrefour. Changes in retailtrade are connected with consolidation processes as well as increasing role of modern technologies and changes in consumer behavior.
