Summary/Abstract: The Ottoman-Habsburg Rivalry in the Mid-16th Century and the Emergence of the Transylvanian Principality under Ottoman Rule. The present paper analyzes the political and military circumstances under which the new balance of strength emerged in east-central Europe in the second half of the 16th century. The incapacity of the House of Austria to mobilize Christian forces and the conflict between the political priorities of the Habsburgs in Vienna and Madrid enabled the sultan to gain control over Transylvania. After 1541, the Transylvanian Principality became a vassal to the Ottoman Porte, like Moldavia and Wallachia.
