Summary/Abstract: The growing need for a scientific reflection on the phenomenon of startups, understood as the emanation of the digital revolution and the economy based on innovation, encounters serious barriers of conceptual and terminological nature. There is noclear definition of a startup and clear criteria that distinguish startups from other formsof new ventures. Therefore, the results of research on startups are mostly incomparable, and in some cases may even be misleading. These problems could be reduced thanks to the good definition and subsequent clarification of the field of research for a specific type of projects. The accumulated literature and own results of many years of research allow us to presenta research definition of a startup and to propose a set of factors that distinguish two analysed categories of ventures: startups and new non-startup companies. The focus hasbeen on the differentiating factors that exist in the area of the methodology of managing two types of projects. The issues raised in the article are important for the development– on the one hand, new organisations (continuity of management processes), and on the other – stimulation (qualitative development) of already existing organisations.
