Summary/Abstract: The Task of Metaphorology presents the philosophical method of Hans Blumenberg which serves to analyse the ways of gaining one’s bearings in the world through the cognisance of the unintentional premises that are the building blocks of theories. Its main aim is to research the history of absolute metaphors. Tracing their history allows us to recognise changes in horizons of meaning, as well as the passage of principles and their change when the limits of epoch have been crossed. Blumenberg combined metaphorology with a theory of reception and a theory of epochal thresholds, creating a sort of phenomenology of history. The task of metaphorology is therefore to identify previously unrevealed principles of understanding the world carried over from the past to contemporary theory.
