Summary/Abstract: Elegy of Fortinbras is one of the most famous poems by Zbigniew Herbert and it was also analysed many times. The present article is an attempt at new interpretation of this poem, in which the author draws his attention to a discourse of masculinity. Herbert was interested in Hamlet in 1950s, when he wrote an essay on Shakespearian character. At the same time he was deeply impressed by famous screen version of Hamlet adapted, directed and starred by Laurence Olivier. In Elegy poet leads to confrontation between two men’s attitudes: Fortinbras masculinity is hegemonic whereas Hamlet’s masculinity is subversive. The author argues that Herbert recognized masculine attitude of Hamlet in his masters and teachers at that time: Elzenberg, Zawieyski, Turowicz.
