How much Fish in Fish? Questions on the margins of Stanley Fish’s Professional Correctness

Summary/Abstract: The publication of the Polish translation of Stanley Fish’s Professional Correctness provides a perfect occasion for the discussion of the ideas of the American scholar as well as of Polish literary studies which tries to define its own status after the decline of the structuralist paradigm. In his book Fish returns to the philological idea of literary studies against the cultural studies or the interpretative strategies of New Historicism. The article show however, that it is not possible to ascertain whether Fish’s stance is conservative or even essentialist, which would mean a radical change of his theory, or does he rather offer a consequently conventionalist and constructivist attitude in order to assume a different perspective on literary studies.
