Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the outcome of literature studies, which revealed bipolar opinions regarding relation between share of foreign ownership in the banking sector and financial stability. The economic reality is also diversified – the article presents an analysis of ownership structure of banking sectors across Europe, with special attention given to Poland, and its impact on their financial stability. What is more, the article proves that in current economic conditions, the regulators which shape licensing policy in banking sectors, aim at ownership diversification by inviting foreign capital into highly concentrated markets with dominance of domestic banking players (or the other way round) or try to mitigate risk generated by dominance of geographically concentrated cross-border banking. The study was carried out on the basis of an analysis of literature, legal acts and supervisory statements. Qualitative analysis was complemented with quantitative research, based on analysis of statistical data.
