Summary/Abstract: The role of the minimum wage should therefore be seen as complementary in the context of other protective measures taken to alleviate poverty. Minimum wages are often both in individual countries and between them compared in relation to the average wage. However, this measure significantly depends on how it is measured in both the average and the minimum wage. The use of the median instead of the average salary is probably a better background for minimum wage. In particular, there is a better measure for international comparisons – showing the enormous diversity of the wage distribution between countries. The gap between the minimum and the average wage is different for the different groups of employees, which is the result of the diversity of age, gender, skills of the workforce in the compared countries.
