Summary/Abstract: Over 840 letters in the nine-volume ‘Collected Letters’ series refer to Joseph Conrad’s health worries and symptoms. Conrad attributed his symptoms to gout. However, the letters suggest a recurring complex illness, probably Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (SLE). Later degenerative symptoms suggest Osteoarthritis rather than the destructive inflammatory arthritis typically associated with gout.
