Translating the other, constructing the self. Japanese premodern encyclopedias and the transculturality of Knowledge

Summary/Abstract: In its sublimated and highly stylized premodernity as a closed country, Japan reached an impressive level of assimilation and conversion of foreign cultural and technological assets, originating primarily from the Chinese mainland. However, by the dawn of the 19th century, one of the greatest achievements of the school of the so-called rangaku-sha became the translation process of important Western books tacking the problematic of organizing and systemizing Western knowledge.
