Summary/Abstract: The international security environment is in a constant change. New threats to the Euro-Atlantic security frequently appear, and the North Atlantic Alliance, the main political-military organization with responsibilities in maintaining the security of this space, must find new solutions to deal with them. In the context of the global financial and economic crisis, one of the biggest challenges that NATO is facing is regarding the development of the capabilities that are needed. At the Chicago summit was launched the Smart Defense initiative, through which can be developed capabilities which at national level would have been difficult or even impossible to be developed.
