Summary/Abstract: The bishop Dositei Herescu was a descendant of Herescu noble family from Moldavia. As a former bishop of Radauti and later on as Bukovina’s bishop, he was a skillful Ecclesiastes diplomat, a clever mastermind of his country and diocese, and a promoter of religious beliefs and of Romanian traditions in Bukovina after it became part of the Habsburg Empire. Founder of the wooden church of Vadu Vlădichii (1773), of the “Holy Trinity Church” in Cernăuţi (1774) and of the church in Vicovu de Jos (1777), as well as of the bell tower of the episcopal church “Saint Nicholas of Rădăuţi” (1781), Dositei Herescu was granted permission to bring the relics of St. John the New from Zolkiew, Poland, to Suceava, in 1783. In addition, his name is linked to the creation of the Imperial Religion Fund knows as the Greek Oriental Church Fund of Bukovina. The article proposes an insight into Dositei Herescu’s biography, insisting on his descendancy, the stages of training and the factors that influenced his destiny. There are also presented some defining aspects of his activity in the periods 1750–1777 and 1777–1789 regarding the solving of the ecclesiastical problems (by respecting the ecclesiastical canons) and the management of the social and even political situations specific to those times.
