Summary/Abstract: On the background of brief theoretical considerations and literature review, this article presents the results of the exploratory study of young consumers about their perception of the Internet of Things (IoT) - treated as the environment creating a new quality of information technology for consumers. The study was conducted in 2016 using CAWI, by investigating purpose sample of 223 young consumers from Eastern Poland. Research results are suggesting that the concept of the Internet of Things is not well known and not always well understood among respondents, despite that, a significant part of them are frequent users of the devices operating as part of the Internet of Things ecosystem. The article describes participants’ perception of the benefits and risks of consumer use of the Internet of Things in areas identified by exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The strongest perceived benefit is the convenience for everyday life, and the greatest threat - loss of privacy (significantly greater in men group comparing to women one). Implications and limitations of mentioned research findings are discussed.
