Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes the factors, which according to broadly diffused opinions make family firms less innovative than non-family firms. By proposing a more selective typologization of family firms and differentiating them in the context of variety of innovation forms and modes, the author questions the myths pointing to the lack of conclusive reasons to negate the capacity of family firms to innovate and stay sustainable. A way out of too easy overgeneralization is to design theoretically founded pro- and anti-innovative mechanisms that might characterize different types of family firms.
