How Transparent is the vowel i?

Summary/Abstract: According to earlier descriptions of Hungarian vowel harmony i behaves transparently both in the stem and the suffix. In this paper we present a study that supports our hypothesis asserting that in some cases the stem i is not necessarily but optionally transparent, that is, following such fluctuating stems the vowel i in the suffix may further increase the chance of palatal suffixing.
