Summary/Abstract: Convergence is one of the key priorities of European economic integration, with the aim of reducing development disparities between regions The research problem stems from the economic, political, social and other constraints in the Western Balkan countries, which are slowing down their progress and the achievement of the full EU membership, which is defined as their key long-term strategic goal. Conducted research aims to scientifically analyse and present the theoretical foundations of convergence processes and to analyse the state of real convergence achieved so far in the Western Balkan countries. The conducted research identified positive developments in the observed countries in the form of an increase of GDP per capita, positive dynamics of economic growth and an increasing orientation toward modern drivers of economic growth. However, these countries are still facing with problems related to the labour market, living standards and productivity gains. The current situation presents a challenge for holders of economic and political power in defining comprehensive policies and structural reforms in order to secure the conditions for further convergence towards developed EU Member States.
