Summary/Abstract: The name Schengen Group may mean little to many Russians, Belarusians, and Ukrainians. Starting 1 October, the millions who cross Poland's eastern land border every year may rue the European Union's border-free Schengen zone. For the sake of joining Schengen within a few years after becoming an EU member next May, Poland has erected much higher barriers to entry from the east, despite the economic damage it may bring to both sides of the border.
