Summary/Abstract: This paper contrasts the use of conjuncts as discourse markers in academic discourse in the field of chemical engineering written by native speakers of English with those written in Serbian. The analysis focuses on the adverbials which fall into the class of conjuncts with the following semantic categories: listing, summation, apposition, contrast, inference, result and transition. The adverbials were contrasted regarding their number, diversity and frequency, the taxonomy of their syntactic forms, as well as their position against the segments which they connect. Results showed that the English sample contained more conjuncts with respect to both variety and frequency. When it comes to the syntactic forms used, it was oserved that adverbs were dominant over other forms in the English sample, particularly when it comes to their frequency. On the other hand, although only 12 out of 30 adverbials used in the papers in Serbian were adverbs, their frequency was only slightly lower than the frequency of other forms used. The adverbials were predominantly used initially in both samples, and the final position was extremely rare. The English sample contained more examples of medial position (with the segments at the level of sentences), whereas the authors of the papers written in Serbian preferred the medial position between two segments at the level of clauses.
