Letters of Laza Kostić to Marko Car

Summary/Abstract: This paper presents unpublished letters of Laza Kostić to Marko Car, taken from the manuscript fund of the National Library of Serbia. They are mainly concerned with Kostić’s works, his play Uskok’s Mistress (Uskokova ljuba) or Gordana and a polemical book On Jovan Jovanović Zmaj. In the former case, the author intended to put his play on the international scene (through translations and theatrical adaptations), while in the latter, to pass comments on the critical reactions to his polemical analysis of the poetical works of J. Jovanović Zmaj. At the time of the said correspondence and for a long while after, Car had been the most distinguished literary critic and essayist among Serbs in Croatia.
