Summary/Abstract: This study is based on the discovery in a private archive of six documents related to the Târnoveanu family, dating from the 17th and the 18th centuries. These charters provide an insight into the genealogy of the Desa noble family (Dolj County), known from mid-17th century under the name of Târnoveanu. Although at a first sight the six documents are rather blunt, once analysed carefully they reveal some precious information with regard to the family’s genealogy and to some of its members’ activities. The Târnoveanu family has its beginnings in mid-16th century, but its most illustrious representative is Radu from Desa, chancellor and vornic, mentioned in documents from the second decade of the 17th century. Radu was involved in the political turmoil from 1631-1632 that led to Matthew Basarab’s ascension to the Wallachian throne. Significantly, throughout several generations, there were several chancellors and scribes in the Târnoveanu family active in the Wallachian princely chancery. Apparently, the Târnoveanu family made use of its literate knowledge to enhance its social status. All six documents are edited in the appendix of the article.
