Summary/Abstract: The paper gives attention to a well-known genre of journals and newspapers to the column. The analysis of more than 100 columns of Jiri Hanak (from the years 20062010) came to a conclusion that this Czech journalist (writing for an independent newspaper Právo) is a successor of the best representatives of Czech democratic journalism, Karel Havlicek Borovsky and Karel Capek. A frequent topic of a political writer J. Hanák is the conflict between the European integration and nationalism. His columns and other texts are marked by a rich vocabulary, plenty of metaphors based on an outstanding knowledge of history, by a sarcastic irony and extraordinary elaborated intertextual dimension.
