Summary/Abstract: Tito experienced the Stalinist purges mainly outside of the Soviet Union, which allowed him to survive, but also to take advantage of them and to become the main leader of the party. The stays in Moscow in 1938 and 1939 were severe tests for him, but through a clever mixture of political opportunism and personal selfishness he knew how to distance himself from all his colleagues who perished in the purges, thus removing the suspicions that weighed on him too. The fact that he twice managed to return from Moscow unscathed as at least a messenger, if not, as he represented himself, as a Comintern proxy, allowed him to definitively establish himself at the top of the communist hierarchy in Yugoslavia, whose revival he had begun in 1936.
