Summary/Abstract: This paper approaches the topic of the European Security and Defence Policy - ESDP, the main instrument of the second pillar of the European Union: the Common Foreign and Security Policy. In the first part, the author reviews the past six decades previous to the establishment of ESDP, highlighting the most important events that have led to its creation. In the second part, he points out the main bodies that are involved in ESDP, as well as the decision-making process and writes about the EU Battlegroups. In the final part, the author mentions the European Gendarmerie Force and enumerates the operations in which the EU takes part.
