Paradox as an Artistic Means in the Style of “Weaving Words” (based on the Life of Sergius of Radonezh)

Summary/Abstract: The literary paradox as an artistic device was often used in Old Russian literature of the “weaving of words” style. Antitheses, antinomies and oppositions play a special role in the hagiographic works of Epiphanius the Wise: the author emphasizes the most important ideas of the work with the help of the literary paradox: the idea of holiness, the opposition of earthly and heavenly life, the idea of miracle and the presence of the Divine.
