Summary/Abstract: Human Intelligence (HUMINT) represents the oldest and most elementary form of intelligence activity; however, in the modern HUMINT collection, the manner in which operations are conducted is more complex, dictated by both official protocols and the nature of the source of the information, and limited by legal and ethical constraints. In this venture, the performance of HUMINT operators is influenced by several factors that can be both objective and subjective in nature - either technical, economic, social, situational and organizational conditions, or personal, personality, health, and psychological features. Although many HUMINT collection skills may be taught, the development of a skilled HUMINT operator requires experience in dealing with people in all conditions and under all circumstances. There are many intangibles in the definition of a “good” HUMINT operator, but certain character traits are invaluable and deserve being carefully observed in the selection process, along the career development and task assignments.
