Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of December 1989, Romania still appeared to be a Communist monolith. The autocratic nature of Ceausescu's radical dictatorship continued unchanged. But it turned out that an opposition force was mustering in the structural hierarchy of power. Logical analysis of the events of the end of December point to Ion Iliescu, as the main actor, and most probably even the co-author of these events. The Hungarian minority in Timisoara proved to be the detonator
